Difference between spun and forged wheels

The difference between spun wheels and forged wheels lies in their cost, appearance, and performance. A wheel that undergoes the casting process using the spinning method is referred to as a spun-cast wheel, while a forged wheel is made through forging. The differences between them are as follows:

Cost:

Spinning wheel technology is relatively simple and suitable for mass production with low costs. On the other hand, forging wheel technology is complex, resulting in higher costs but excellent performance. Since forging production processes provide significantly improved mechanical performance indicators compared to low-pressure casting, with certain indicators being several times higher, wheels of the same type are generally forged, making them much more expensive than low-pressure cast ones.

Appearance:

It is difficult to distinguish between the appearances of the two, but there are significant differences in their metal properties. Forged wheels have superior fatigue resistance, impact resistance, and strength compared to spun wheels. Generally, spun wheels weigh about 20% more than forged wheels.

Performance:

Spinning is a low-pressure casting process for wheels, where the filling is solidified under pressure. Therefore, spun wheels have good fillability, low porosity, and high density. Forged wheels typically exhibit higher strength, toughness, and fatigue strength since the flow direction of the wheel’s grains aligns with the direction of stress.

We are professional in forged wheels for many years, you can find more forged wheels as below.
