What are forged wheels

Because forged wheels are expensive, people are concerned about what are forged wheels.

Next, I’ll explain what a forged wheel is from a purely technical point of view and why it’s expensive.

Firstly, the term forged wheel is relative to cast wheels. The main purpose of adding the word forged is to emphasize that the wheel is shaped in a “forged” way, thus distinguishing it from a normal cast wheel. Since casting is the most common means of wheel manufacturing, the word “casting” is not emphasized in the general cast wheels.

So the key question is, what is forging? In simple terms, it is the process of kneading metal like dough to make it more resilient.

To explain it professionally, the forging process goes like this:

Under the action of a large press of hundreds of tons, the metal billet undergoes more violent plastic deformation, the internal microstructure of the metal is changed, shrinkage and shrinkage is reduced, the denseness of the metal is increased, the flow of the metal tends to be consistent … These microscopic changes can not be seen by your eyes, only through the optical microscope can be scientifically observed. But one thing needs to be clear, is that these changes will make the metal tensile strength increases, fracture elongation increases, the material toughness increases.

Simply put, forging has what effect, that is: the wheel material performance is improved.

Since the material performance is improved, the weight-bearing capacity of the wheel is improved, and for the same car, the weight of the wheel can be lighter if forged wheels are used. Therefore, you can see that forged wheels generally have more “holes” dug into them, which is actually a weight reduction process. As you can see in the picture below.

So, some people say that forged wheels are just a little lighter than cast ones, and they don’t feel that much different. Yes, there is not much difference in personal experience and safety, after all, the performance of the car is not reflected by the wheels. However, forged wheels represent the progress of technology, it is the progress of countless parts manufacturing technology to constitute the progress of the whole car, constitute the progress of society.

How are forged wheels made? Is it reliable?

The process of making forged wheels is to first heat a whole block of embryo at high temperature and then use a forging machine of 10,000 tons to press it into shape, which also forms the initial embryo of the wheel.

The quality of the first embryo will be very heavy, thick inside and out, and then the next step of CNC lathe finishing process.

The finished forged wheel is much lighter and more reliable than a cast wheel, and can withstand higher stresses. The production process of forged wheels is more precise and the manufacturing cost is more expensive, so forged wheels are generally used in some high-end models.

Do not do carry, pure code word, common simple description.

At present, wheel processing on several ways. Iron is generally rolled or spun, and then welded. Aluminum wheels are cast and forged. There are also a few machining centers purely carved, this belongs to the VIP custom, super expensive, not to mention.

Forging, casting are processing methods. Casting is very simple, that is, the molten aluminum water into the mold, cooling and molding. Forging is a little more complex, aluminum is only heated, not melted. The aluminum is then put into a mold and pressed into shape by a large impact. Obviously, the strength of the natural flow forming wheel is definitely not as strong as that of the wheel formed by high pressure.

So forging is more costly, more expensive and stronger.
