Difference Between Formed Flow and Forged Wheels, Which is Better?

The main differences between flow formed wheels and forged wheels lie in cost, appearance, and performance. In terms of cost, flow formed wheel technology is relatively simple and suitable for mass production, resulting in lower costs. On the other hand, forged wheels involve complex manufacturing processes and higher costs, but offer superior performance. It’s difficult to distinguish them based on appearance alone, but there are significant differences in their metal properties. Forged wheels exhibit better fatigue resistance, impact resistance, and strength compared to flow formed wheels. In terms of weight, flow formed wheels are generally around 20% heavier than forged wheels.

Which is better, flow formed or forged wheels?

It depends on the specific type of flow formed wheel. In terms of performance, flow formed  wheels are generally not as good as forged wheels. However, if a flow formed wheel is made from cold-rolled sheet metal or forged blanks, its performance can approach that of a forged wheel. In addition, flow formed wheels require less raw material than forged wheels, making them more cost-effective and affordable in terms of cost and price.

Choosing Wheels:
1. Avoid blindly increasing wheel size. Some people opt for larger wheels to improve the performance of their vehicle. When the outer diameter of the tire remains the same, larger wheels need to be paired with wider and flatter tires. This reduces lateral sway and improves stability. However, thinner sidewalls of flat tires result in poorer shock absorption performance and comfort.

2. Don’t randomly choose wheels based on personal preference. It is important to seek advice from professionals and select wheels with appropriate dimensions.

3. Preferably, choose aluminum alloy wheels. Compared to traditional cast iron wheels, aluminum alloy wheels offer improved deformation resistance, reduced weight, lower power loss, faster operation, fuel efficiency, and better heat dissipation. In addition, when selecting wheels, opt for those with a simpler structure, as wheels with complex designs may incur higher cleaning costs or be difficult to clean.
